Evies New Baby! First Day as Surrogate Mom!
Image:

On July 14, 2008 my daughter's gaited mare Tanbark's Evening Memories gave birth to a beautiful filly by my stud Midnight CappO'Cino 10 days early. Everything was great the vet came out 24 hours later at noon and checked her out and her Igg levels and everything was perfect. She was nursing slowly so we were supplementing by helping pump the mare out. Within 3.5 hours of the vet leaving I went to check on the baby and feed her the supplement and she was staggering. I grabbed her and when I touched her nose she was cold. I lifeted up her lip and her gums were moist but gray. We lost her within 15 mins of me calling the university  of Madison. Her life passed in my arms as we were warming her to go.

Good comes out of bad, and I am happy to say due to another unfortunate situation where a foal lost her mommy due to a difficult birth. A friend of a friend had a baby at Madison  with no mommy. They were really Close to our house so I offered up my mare.  Yestereday Shadow got a new mommy, and Evie got a new baby to care for, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house after Shadow nursed for the first time.

Here are some pictures. Thank you to all my online buddies for their suggestions and for the help of Dr. J. Hanover and the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and the univeristy of Madison.
